Challenge

Cowboys and coffee have had a lasting relationship together. Creating a rough and rigid image for coffee. However, the persona has slowly evolved created a, well, watered down version of what it used to be. Picture errands at Target, lots of sugar, and whip cream even?? Living on Southern California, this embodiment of coffee has a strong hold on the community, and what I wanted to do was bring it back to its roots, while still incorporating some of the more "modern elements".

With this concept project I wanted to create a modern coffee brand with a focus on the current trend of "coastal cowboy". Also known as the southern California cowboy aesthetic.

Approach

Starting with the color pallet, I knew I wanted something that properly represented the western aesthetic, but with a modern flare. With the bright pop of color initially catching the viewers eyes, I then set out to create a variety of cowboy inspired illustrations that then engage the viewer, and then ultimatly casue the viewer to further interact with the brand wether that may be grabbing the bag off a shelf in a grocery store or stopping to read the advertisement.

/Design & Art Direction

Branded collectable matchboxes, unique store menus and eye grabbing print ads, the brand gets even louder.

With a bold and funky brand identity in place, I didn't want to stop there. Creating a collectable set of branded matchboxes for that fresh pack of Marlboro Reds, or to just light that pumpkin spice candle in the living room of course. I created an array of brand assets from a unique in store menu, to print ads for the local rodeo.

/Conclusion

Through this concept project, I wanted to create something positioned around a current trends but challenge myself in a way to not solely tie the brand to it, enabling a lasting design. I also was able to explore a more contemporary art style, with the contrasting dark images, with bright brand colors.
